Caique Crazy Capers is here to bring you a comprehensive personal guide to the Feathered Comical Clown called the Caique Parrot. We will be giving our readers a day to day story of caique life aswell as stories through our forum users.
Each and every owner has a different story to tell.

What is a Caique (pronounced ki-EEKS)?

The caique parrot is
A medium sized parrot from the Amazon rainforest which comes in two species and five subspecies, White Bellied and Black Headed. Both look as if they are wearing outfits: yellow or orange pants, white shirt, green jacket and a orange or black hat.

The Caique is an attractive parrot who can be surprisingly destructive for it’s 9 inch size and can be quite noisy. However they are extremely tame, highly social birds and can make excellent pets. They live for around 40 years.

Also known as Seven-Color Parrot, Dancing Parrot, Clown Parrot or even Monkey Parrot.

Whats their party trick?
The caique hop, this is so cool and fascinating to watch, we will have a video of this online soon.
Surfing, caiques love to surf through your hair, on your clothes and after bathing, a video of this will be online soon too.
Playing on their backs infact they are acrobatic little chaps who live to play, and have a real zest for life.

Poisons and Toxins : Protecting Your Birds From Danger

Keeping birds in our home environment presents us with many challenges. Insuring the safety and well-being of our feathered friends is a large responsibility and one that is taken seriously by many of those that enjoy keeping birds as pets. Keep in mind that our homes are not a natural environment for birds and in many ways can be very hostile to them. To keep them from harm one should always monitor their birds when they are out of their cages.
The following excerpts are from The Complete Bird Owner's Handbook, Gary A. Gallerstein D.V.M. , Howell Book House, 1994. This excellent book covers all aspects of bird care and health that is essential for both the pet bird owner and avian professional. We wish to thank the author for the permission to present this material to you. Net Pets hopes that you will find Dr. Gallerstein's information as an exceptional reference source in helping to provide a safe environment for your birds.

Suspect poisoning if your bird is sick and you observe:

Contact with a known poisonous substance, including chewing or playing with the packaging, exposure to fumes or odors.
Opened or spilled containers of any poisonous substance.
Toxic plants recently chewed on.
A foreign substance noted on the feathers

Signs To Watch

For Sudden onset of regurgitation, diarrhea, coughing, breathing problems, and/or depression.
Bloody droppings Redness or burns around the mouth.
Convulsions.
Paralysis.
Shock.

First Aid For Poisoning

1. Remove the poison to prevent further ingestion.
2. For eye contact, flush the eye with lukewarm water. For skin contact, flush the area with water. For fume intoxication, ventilate the room immediately - open windows, use a fan, or better yet, remove the bird from the area altogether.
3. Call your veterinarian.

Bring a sample of the poison and its packaging.
Bring a sample of the bird's most recent droppings.
Provide general supportive care.

Lead Poisoning

Lead poisoning is one of the most common toxicities occurring in pet birds. There are a number of potential sources of lead in most homes. This type of poisoning could frequently be prevented by simply recognizing the common sources of lead in the environment.

Sources Of Lead For Pet Birds

Bird toys weighted with lead, old costume jewelry, lead caulking in stained-glass windows, fishing weights, curtain weights, and some types of screens and wires cause the majority of lead poisoning in pet birds.
Newsprint, lead pencils, and paint manufactured within the last twenty years will not cause poisoning.
As strange as it may seem, inspect branches to be used as perches before placing them in the cage. There have been cases of birds finding and ingesting buckshot embedded in the wood.

Signs To Watch For

Depression, weakness.
Blindness
Seizures, "walking in circles," "head wandering".
Regurgitation.
Droppings; excessively wet, may even be bloody ("tomato juice-colored" urine)
General signs of a sick bird.

First Aid For Lead Poisoning:

Unfortunately, there is no first aid available. In most instances, the pet owner is not even aware the bird has ingested lead. Treatment is very specific, and veterinary care must be initiated as soon as possible.

"Teflon Toxicity" or Polymer Fume Fever.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic polymer used as a non-stick surface in cookware. The brand names Teflon, Silverstone, and T-Fal are the best known, but PTFE-coated products are also manufactured under other trade names.
As Dr. Peter Sakas states: Under normal cooking conditions, PTFE-coated cookware is stable and safe. When PTFE is heated above 530 degrees Farenheit, however, it undergoes breakdown and emits caustic (acid) fumes. Most foods cook at lower temperatures: water boils at 212 degrees, eggs fry at 350 degrees, and deep frying occurs at 410 degrees. But when empty PTFE-coated cookware is left on a burner set on the high setting, it can reach temperatures of 750 degrees or greater. Thus, if a pan is being prre-heated on a burner and forgotten, or if water boils out of a pot, breakdown of the PTFE can occur. In other words, PTFE cookware has to be "abused" to emit toxic fumes, but this is not as rare as it might seem; many people fall asleep after they put pots or pans on the stove to heat.
Birds kept in areas close to the kitchen will usually die very shortly after breathing the fumes. Even birds kept in another room are at great risk. Severe breathing difficulties, such as gasping for breath, may be seen just prior to death. Humans, dogs, cats, and other mammals are somewhat less sensitive to the very serious effects of these fumes.

First Aid For Teflon Toxicity

1. Remove the affected bird immediately from the home and supply lots of fresh air. Unfortunately, other than this, no first aid exists.
2. Call your avian veterinarian immediately.

Insecticide Poisoning

The most common insecticide poisoning in pet birds occurs when the house is sprayed (" fogged" or " bombed") for various pests. As already mentioned, birds have very sensitive respiratory systems. Always take the birds and their cages out of the house before spraying. When spraying is finished, open all doors and windows to help remove the odors. Use fans if needed. Do not bring your birds back in the home for at least twenty-four hours. Consult your veterinarian for the safest and most effective foggers.

First Aid For Insecticide Poisoning

1. Remove the bird immediately and supply lots of fresh air.
2. Provide general supportive care.
3. Call your veterinarian immediately.
4. Bring the insecticide along.

A Day in the Life of a Caique

Good Morning!

Is that the birds I hear outside? it must be its 6am should I chirp back at them yet??
I'd better not I shall wait a little longer until my human mum and dad get up.
I so want to answer all my feathered friends outside, but.. no I love mum and dad I will wait for them to get up. I really hope they dont lay in today.
Ooo oooo I can hear footsteps upstairs they must be up yipeeee, I can answer my friends!!

Whooot woooo (thats my wolf whistle) I whistle loudly, oh boy my friends outside all start making the strange noises they always make back at me,
I know! I shall start impersonating all the sounds they make, this is soo much fun!

Ok now I have successfully woke the whole house up (I get away with murder) I can get my beak in shape for my breakfast, my mum and dad must love me so much I get brekky before them heehee.

I can hear them coming down stairs, here I go "Whooot Woooooooo, hello!" they love that look at them smiling as they come through the door to see me, wayyheyy I will greet them with a great big kiss! oops and a poo, I know I know but us Caiques eats lots of fruit so pooing lots is part of our make-up, but dont worry its fruity not yukky.

Aww mums giving me my fave head rubs, oo up a bit, left a bit, thats the way, its no good I have to beak rub mums finger now, thats another of my fave habits I love to beak rub, We are beaky birds, we use our beaks like a third leg so to speak.
Dad just said he is coming with my brekky, yum Im hungry, what have I got, what have I got??? patience isnt high on our agenda either we want things now! not later.
Yum some fruit and my fave parrot mix, thats me sorted, "purr purr" thats my contented filling me face with yummy food sound.

Yo these berries are juicy, look at how far Im spreading the seeds up the wall, I have pebble dashed all my mum and dads nice white walls, lucky mum doesnt mind lots of cleaning, I make a mess of my cage too especially the perchs and ropes, they are so good for drying my sticky feet and beak, and dunking I love dunking, thats dunking my food and most other things I can get my claws on into my nice clean water bowl, did I mention I need my water changed often too?
Im a messy birdy but worth it because Im so darn entertaining and loving.

Once I have eaten I will put a nice show on for my folks to see, they love me playing on my back, climbing, swinging around the cage (i need lots to climb and swing on), playing with my fave toys, ooo and foraging I so love foraging (thats treats wrapped in paper or you could even hide my food bowl under paper for me to find) a caiques life is play play and more play, (inbetween eating).
Iv got to burn off all this energy I have, thats how we stay so cute and small.

Well after a couple of hours of playing and entertaining its out time!!!! yessssss!
Dads gone to work after taking my little human sisters to school, they never play with me in the morning, our play time comes tonight, ooo forgot to say me and dad played the whistle the tune game before he left, (he always loses, Im so clever at catching him out).

Mum gets me out for as mums says "quality time" I dont know what that means but I know its a good thing.
Now this is a whole new ball game when Im out, I have nerves of steal Im not scared of anything out here, so extra extra supervision is needed, mum always puts the dogs away to ensure Im not their lunch lol.

Now yes I am a hard nut but if there is a sudden bang or something is different around here I do get spooked, oh boy I am a pain when spooked, I usually fly off and run the risk of really hurting myself, I know its dangerous but there is nothing I can do, after all Im a parrot and its my natural instinct.

We play chase the stick I love this game, mum laughs so much watching me, mind you sometimes I really want that stick and can at times give a little nip to get my own way, Come on Im a parrot I dont do teasing, whats yours is mine and whats mine is mine, good theory eh?

Mum does not like me out too long, so I pop back in have a nice little drink then its unwind and chill for a little while, while mum watchs daytime tv, (yawn)

Anyway it wont be long before my little sisters are home and no doubt they will have a friend or two with them.
They like showing me off to their friends, its a hard life being so adorable.

Awww mums says see you soon, gives me a little rub, and packs the dogs off in the car to pick my sisters up.
Now, do I behave?? like heck I do, I search call (thats the loud noise I make when alone, Im no baby but Im not fussed on being left home alone) up until I see the car pull up then its scream and whistle with excitement, you would think she had gone away for a month, I cant help it I love these guys, they are my world.

Heyy a day off from friends today just my sisters to play with, they are not that old so play with me through the cage, now that is a good idea, these human kids dont know their own strength.

Here we go its tell me how cute I am, and yes Im a good boy (these guys like repeating themselves over and over about good boy, they must think Im a parrot heehee)

Aw lots of head rubs and oooo she wants to touch my foot, nope Im off, I run of to the back of the cage and start swinging around, they love this bit, wheee wheeee swing, swing, whooo hoooo how was that for a landing girls? girls? hey where you gone girls? they always vanish when I go on show off mode, kids eh?

Guess I will snack for a while before more play, and I get my quality time with mum and dad later.

Dads home.... you know, I must be special, he fusses the dogs as he comes in (no choice there they greet him as he comes in) then its "hello Elo hows your day been?" with a head tickle,
heehee poor mum gets the last hello but she does get a great big hug and kiss,.

This is my chill time now as everybody settles for tea, my time comes later, but I cant resist whistling out for my family to impersonate me, with the odd high pitched scream thrown in, not to mention how I amuse myself by laughing at my own antics heehee.

Its 7pm and I get my supper more of my faves, food glorious food!! I get some cooked food this time too only a little but boy its so tasty. yummm.
Oh oops a daisy, look at the mess I have made again, not to worry, mum will sort that out when dad gets me out for our "quality time" later.

Around 8pm my sisters go to bed but not before telling me how much they love me and hope I sleep well, they never fail to tell me, lucky they cant see me blushing through my feathers, that would be so uncool.

I leave mum and dad chill for a while then its quality time!!!! here comes dad, I love this bit, Im going to the sofa, I can parade and strut my stuff until my hearts content there, playing chase with dad then mum joins in, as we play I hear them praise me big style, I am such a lucky bird, to have a family that love me, spending plenty of play time with me, giving me lots of toys, fresh food and water a big roomy cage what more could I ask for.

Around 10 -10-30pm Im ready for my bed, have you guys seen my bed?? (of course not) but anyway, I, yes me Elo, I am the proud owner of a bed tent or happy hut as some people call them, ohh mann do I love snuggling up in there, this bed is sheer luxury, I have heard not all caiques like these? I was not sure at first but after a little encouragement from mum and dad, i was in there.
Now Im safe and snuggled at night not to mention having privacy.

I say good night to mum and dad, well actually I give them kisses, We arnt great at speech, but I can say hello you want to hear me saying hello??? well you cant Im a caique remember I will only speak when I want too, its part of our charm heehee.
I have my last head tickles mum and dad say how much they love me, dad tells the dogs no barking and waking Elo up, haha thats only right too dont you think?

Off I go hopping and climbing up to my bed (the long way around of course, just to show off) my bed is at the back of the cage, and Im ready for sleep time, its been a busy day, ' yawn ' I wonder if I will talk in my sleep tonight? yes we do that too so our human freinds say, I deny it as much as they do about their snoring heehee.
I snuggle into bed all comfy making my ever so cute settle down noises, mmm Im so tired.
Night night mum and dad I love you too.
